Best Iced Instant Coffee Recipes You Can Make in 60 Seconds

Seven iced coffee recipes that start with a spoonful of instant coffee. Five take about a minute, and none need a machine.

Hand holding a layered iced coffee with milk

Iced coffee is now an everyday habit. This fall, cold and iced drinks made up 21% of the coffee Americans drank in a day, up from 17% in January, per a fall survey by the National Coffee Association. Most of those glasses start with a machine or a line at the counter. Instant iced coffee starts with a spoon.

Our president and co-founder, Andrea Giraldo, made her first trip to Colombia's coffee country when she was eight days old (our story). Today we bring 100% Colombian Arabica from family farms in the Andes to your kitchen, freeze-dried so it's ready the moment water hits it.

Here are seven instant iced coffee recipes. Five take about a minute. The concentrate takes 5 minutes to batch, then 15 seconds a glass. The dalgona takes 3 minutes, and we think you'll forgive it.

How to make iced coffee with instant coffee (the 60-second method)

To make iced coffee with instant coffee, stir 2 teaspoons of instant coffee into 2 ounces of hot water until it dissolves. Pour it over a tall glass of ice. Top it with 6 ounces of cold water or milk. The whole thing takes about 60 seconds once your water is hot.

  1. Dissolve. Stir the coffee (and any sugar) into 2 oz of hot water for about 10 seconds.
  2. Fill. Pack a 16 oz glass with ice.
  3. Pour. Pour the hot coffee over the ice. It chills in seconds.
  4. Top. Add 6 oz of cold water for iced black coffee, or cold milk for a creamy glass.
Strength Instant coffee Hot water Cold water or milk Best for
Light 1 tsp 2 oz 6 oz Black iced coffee on a hot afternoon
Classic 2 tsp 2 oz 6 oz Most glasses
Bold 3 tsp 2 oz 6 oz Lattes with lots of milk

Why the hot splash? It dissolves the granules fast. It also takes care of sugar, which dissolves slowly in a cold drink. Water just off the boil works best. A kettle, a hot water tap, or about 30 seconds in the microwave all do the job.

No hot water at all? Put the coffee and 8 oz of cold water or milk in a jar with a lid. Shake hard for 20 to 30 seconds, then pour over ice.

1. Classic Iced Colombian Coffee (the base recipe)

Glass of iced black coffee in morning light

This is the glass every other recipe builds on. Think of it as an iced tinto. In Colombia, a tinto is a small cup of black coffee, often sweetened with panela, an unrefined cane sugar (Flavors of Bogotá).

You'll need

  • 2 tsp Giraldo Farms Regular Instant Coffee
  • 2 oz hot water
  • 1 tsp brown sugar or grated panela (optional)
  • 1 tall glass of ice
  • 6 oz cold water or cold milk

Steps

  1. Stir the coffee and sugar into the hot water until no granules remain.
  2. Fill the glass with ice and pour the coffee over it.
  3. Top with cold water for black, or milk for creamy. Stir and sip.

Drink it black first. Our Regular has a sweet, fruity aroma and good body, so you may find you want less sugar than usual.

2. Iced Vanilla Latte

Glass of iced coffee with milk on a table

This is the easiest instant coffee iced latte there is. The vanilla is already in the coffee, so you control the sugar.

You'll need

  • 2 tsp Giraldo Farms Vanilla Instant Coffee
  • 2 oz hot water
  • 1 to 2 tsp maple syrup or sugar (optional)
  • Ice
  • 6 oz cold whole milk or oat milk

Steps

  1. Stir the coffee and sweetener into the hot water.
  2. Fill a glass with ice, then pour in the cold milk.
  3. Pour the coffee slowly over the top for a café-style layered look. Stir before you drink.

Taste it before you add syrup. Many people find the vanilla is sweet enough.

3. 3-Ingredient Iced Hazelnut Oat Coffee

Three ingredients plus ice. Our Hazelnut has no added sugar, and its nutty notes come through best over ice.

You'll need

  • 2 tsp Giraldo Farms Hazelnut Instant Coffee
  • 2 oz hot water
  • 6 oz cold oat milk
  • Ice

Steps

  1. Stir the coffee into the hot water.
  2. Pour it over a glass of ice.
  3. Top with oat milk and stir.

Oat milk has a mild, cereal-like sweetness that pairs well with hazelnut. Pick an unsweetened oat milk and the glass has no added sugar at all.

4. Iced Amaretto Cream Coffee

Amaretto is an Italian liqueur with a sweet almond flavor. Our Amaretto coffee has that flavor and no alcohol, so it works at 7 a.m. as well as after dinner.

You'll need

  • 2 tsp Giraldo Farms Amaretto Instant Coffee
  • 2 oz hot water
  • 1 tsp honey or sugar (optional)
  • Ice
  • 4 oz cold water
  • 2 Tbsp heavy cream or half-and-half

Steps

  1. Stir the coffee and honey into the hot water.
  2. Pour it over a glass of ice and add the cold water.
  3. Pour the cream slowly over the back of a spoon.

Watch it drift down through the coffee in ribbons. Stir when you're ready.

5. Café Granizado (Colombian Coffee Slush)

Tall glass of blended iced coffee topped with cinnamon

Granizado comes from granizo, the Spanish word for hail. It's a blended coffee slush, and you'll find it on coffee shop menus in Colombia. You'll need a blender, but it still comes together in about a minute.

You'll need

  • 3 tsp Giraldo Farms Regular or Decaf Instant Coffee
  • 2 oz hot water
  • 2 tsp sugar or grated panela
  • 1 1/2 cups ice
  • 3 oz cold milk

Steps

  1. Stir the coffee and sugar into the hot water.
  2. Add it to a blender with the ice and milk.
  3. Blend for 20 to 30 seconds, until it looks like wet snow. Pour and eat with a straw or a spoon.

For a stronger slush, swap the plain ice for coffee ice cubes (see the fixes table below). For an after-dinner treat, use Decaf. It has 97 to 99% of the caffeine removed.

6. Dalgona Whipped Iced Coffee

Dalgona whipped coffee foam over cold milk in a glass

This is the one recipe that breaks the 60-second rule. Dalgona went viral in 2020 and takes its name from a Korean honeycomb candy. You whip instant coffee, sugar and hot water into a thick foam, then spoon it over cold milk.

It works best with instant coffee. Dalgona uses about 6 grams of coffee in 30 ml of water, which is at least five times the coffee in one-eighth the water of a normal cup (FoodCrumbles). Brewed coffee isn't nearly that concentrated.

You'll need

  • 1 Tbsp Giraldo Farms Regular Instant Coffee
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp hot water
  • Ice
  • 6 oz cold milk

Steps

  1. Stir the coffee, sugar and hot water in a bowl until every granule dissolves.
  2. Whip with a hand mixer or milk frother for 2 to 3 minutes. Stop when the foam is thick, pale tan and holds soft peaks.
  3. Fill a glass with ice and milk. Spoon the foam on top. Stir before you drink.

Keep the sugar. It thickens the liquid and can double or triple the foam (FoodCrumbles). A sugar-free version still whips, but it's darker and collapses faster (Science Borealis). Whisking by hand can take up to 20 minutes. For one glass, a handheld milk frother in a mug is easiest. Heads up: this glass uses 3 teaspoons of coffee, so it's a strong one.

7. Organic Cold Brew-Style Concentrate

True cold brew steeps ground coffee for 12 to 24 hours. This shortcut gives you the same grab-and-pour habit in five minutes. Make it Sunday night and your weekday coffee takes 15 seconds.

Our Organic is USDA Certified Organic and shade-grown in the Colombian Andes. The shade slows ripening and gives the beans more time to develop. The result is a smooth cup with soft spice notes.

You'll need

  • 1/3 cup (16 tsp) Giraldo Farms Organic Instant Coffee
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 1/2 cups cold filtered water

Steps

  1. Stir the coffee into the hot water until smooth.
  2. Add the cold water. The cold water cools the batch fast.
  3. Pour into a jar with a tight lid and chill.

For each glass, pour 1/4 cup (2 oz) of concentrate over ice and top with 6 oz of cold water or milk. Keep the jar sealed in the fridge and use it within about a week. We suggest filtered or bottled water for every coffee, since tap water can add off-flavors.

Why Colombian freeze-dried coffee works best over ice

It's already brewed, so there's nothing to cool

Hot brewed coffee melts ice fast and turns watery. Cold brew skips the heat but needs most of a day. Instant coffee is coffee that was already brewed, then dried. Add water and it's coffee again.

Freeze-drying freezes that brewed coffee and dries it in a vacuum. Cheaper spray-dried powder is dried with hot air instead. Freeze-drying uses 3 to 5 times more energy, says Sucafina, a coffee company that sells both kinds. In return, you get a clean, crisp flavor with brighter top notes (Sucafina). The trade-off is that freeze-dried granules dissolve a bit slower in cold water. That's why our method starts with 2 ounces of hot water.

Cold hides sweetness, so the bean matters more

Your tongue senses less sugar in a cold drink. A 2005 study in Nature, done in mice, found that warming sweet compounds from 59 °F to 95 °F sharply boosts the taste nerve's response to them (Talavera et al.). It may help explain why melted ice cream tastes sweeter than frozen. Chill a cup of coffee and the sweetness fades, so any bitterness stands out.

Many budget instant coffees use Robusta beans. Robusta has about twice the caffeine of Arabica and tastes more bitter, per a 2020 review in the journal Beverages (Seninde and Chambers). Serve it over ice and that bitterness comes forward.

Giraldo Farms uses 100% Colombian Arabica from family farms high in the Andes. At that height, the beans ripen slowly. That builds a dense bean with natural sweetness, and that sweetness keeps a cold glass from tasting harsh.

What a glass of iced instant coffee costs

Here's the coffee cost of one Classic-strength glass (2 teaspoons), using our prices and cups-per-jar counts.

Giraldo Farms coffee Jar price Cups per jar (1 tsp each) Coffee cost per 2-tsp glass
Regular, large 7.04 oz jar $16.99 55 to 70 $0.49 to $0.62
Regular, 3.52 oz jar $9.99 27 to 35 $0.57 to $0.74
Decaf, 3.52 oz jar $12.99 27 to 35 $0.74 to $0.96
Vanilla, Hazelnut or Amaretto, 1.76 oz jar $7.99 14 to 18 $0.89 to $1.14
Organic, 3.52 oz jar $15.99 27 to 35 $0.91 to $1.18

For comparison, a 16 oz iced latte averaged $5.59 on the coffee shop menus Joe tracked in the second quarter of 2026 (Joe). A Classic with milk runs about $1. Swap five café iced lattes a week for the homemade glass and you keep roughly $1,200 a year.

Fixes for the most common iced coffee problems

Problem Why it happens The fix
Watery by the last sip Ice melts as it chills the coffee Go up to 2 teaspoons. Or make coffee ice cubes: stir 2 tsp into 1 cup of water and freeze in a tray.
Gritty or clumpy Freeze-dried granules dissolve slower in cold liquid Dissolve in 2 oz of hot water first, or shake in a lidded jar for 20 to 30 seconds.
Sugar sits at the bottom Sugar dissolves slowly in a cold drink Stir sugar into the hot water step, or use maple syrup or honey.
Tastes more bitter than your hot cup Cold dulls how sweet a drink tastes Start with a smooth Arabica, or reach for Vanilla or Hazelnut.
Flat, dull flavor Air and moisture got into the jar Close the lid right after you scoop. Keep the jar in the pantry, not the fridge.

Moisture is instant coffee's worst enemy, and fridges are humid (Tasting Table). Freeze-dried coffee also loses aroma relatively quickly once the jar is open (Sucafina).

Frequently asked questions

Can you make iced coffee with instant coffee?

Yes. Stir 2 teaspoons of instant coffee into 2 ounces of hot water, pour it over ice, and top with 6 ounces of cold water or milk. It takes about 60 seconds, with no brewing and no waiting for coffee to cool. Use 1 teaspoon for a lighter glass or 3 for a bold latte.

Can I just mix instant coffee with cold water?

Yes. For cold instant coffee with no kettle, put the coffee and cold water or milk in a jar with a lid. Shake for 20 to 30 seconds. Freeze-dried granules dissolve more slowly in cold liquid than cheap spray-dried powder does. A 2-ounce splash of hot water first gives you a smoother glass faster, and it dissolves your sugar too.

Is there a difference between instant coffee and instant iced coffee?

Coffees sold as "instant iced coffee" are made to dissolve easily in cold water or milk. Regular instant coffee makes iced coffee just as well if you dissolve it in a little hot water first. The bigger difference is what's inside the jar: the type of bean and how it was dried.

What instant coffee makes the best iced coffee?

Look for 100% Arabica that's freeze-dried. Cold makes a drink taste less sweet, so a smooth, naturally sweet bean holds up better over ice. Robusta, common in budget instant, has about twice the caffeine and more bitterness. Giraldo Farms Regular is 100% Colombian Arabica, freeze-dried, from high-altitude family farms in the Andes.

How much caffeine is in iced instant coffee?

Giraldo Farms lists about 44 mg of caffeine in a 6 oz cup of our Regular and about 59 mg in an 8 oz cup. A 2-teaspoon iced glass uses twice the coffee, so expect roughly twice the caffeine: about 90 to 120 mg. Our Decaf has 97 to 99% of the caffeine removed. The FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount most healthy adults can have without negative effects (FDA).

How long does instant coffee concentrate last in the fridge?

Store it in a sealed jar in the fridge and use it within about a week for the best flavor. Keep milk out of the batch and add it when you pour each glass. Store the dry jar of coffee in the pantry, since fridge humidity makes granules clump.

Is there a downside to instant coffee?

Cheap instant often tastes bitter because many budget brands use Robusta beans. Freeze-dried coffee also loses aroma relatively quickly once opened, so close the jar right after each scoop. Start with a quality Arabica and store it well, and those downsides mostly go away.
